The largest and most fertile island of the Cyclades


axos, the island of Ariadne, is the largest, most picturesque and fertile island in the Cyclades. The visitor will encounter a unique natural landscape with endless and impressive beaches, next to crystal clear blue waters, combined with a hinterland full of cliffs and high mountains, green valleys, fertile meadows, picturesque small rivers and many other larger villages and smaller ones with the special , traditional architecture. In Chora there is the Archaeological Museum, one of the most important of the Aegean, which is housed in the old commercial school of Nicos Kazantzakis, built in the middle of the 17th century in the Castle area, as well as the local museum next to the Metropolis with sections of Mycenaean capital Naxos in 1300 BC

Naxos, also known as the Ariadne Island, is the largest and most picturesque island of the Cyclades, located in the heart of the Aegean Archipelago. The western part is flat and fertile, while the eastern mountain with a higher peak is the holy mountain Zeus or Zas (1004 m.) Where, against Greek mythology, Zeus’ father Zeus spent his childhood. In Naxos, Dionysus, the god protector of the vineyards and entertainment, was born, who chose for the woman the immortal nymph Ariadni, the daughter of the King of Crete Minos, who linked her name to the island.

 

In Naxos there are numerous finds that represent all the periods of the Cycladic Civilization (4000-1100 BC) where typical samples are kept in the Museum of Naxos, the capital of the island. There are many samples of the Geometric, Archaic and Classical period (1100-330 BC) where Naxos presents a very important culture
